In the 1920 most industrial power was generated on premise where it was used. Within 20 years virtually nothing was generated on premise. Business found it more cost effective to use public utilities for electricity.
So having seen the cloud concept coming we launched CRMNOW as a partner hosted Microsoft Dynamics CRM offering and proceeded to market the brand. Licensing model and virtualised servers to share resource and scale quickly made this a possibility. It was still treated as the classic model and priced accordingly.
Also Microsoft was not ‘all in’ the cloud as they are today. Pricing models Workgroup edition and charity pricing both led the customer away from cloud computing. Published ROI calculations also favoured on premise.
2010 saw a big change with Microsoft moving from reactionary to proactive. Data Centres were built and 90% of Microsoft $9 billion R&D had a Cloud component.
The scene was set and the components are rapidly coming into place. Microsoft Office 365 has taken the Business Productivity suite to a whole new level. Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 will be the first Microsoft Business solution to come to market.
Our greatest challenge now is how to stay focussed while we wait for the bits to fall into place, and how do we enthuse our businesses partners and customers to be prepared for the cloud opportunities.
